Overview
CSDM Validator checks your synced CMDB model against configured Common Service Data Model rules. Use it to identify service modeling gaps, invalid relationships, and structural issues that affect reporting and impact analysis.
When To Use It
Use CSDM Validator when:
- preparing for CSDM cleanup
- validating service models after sync
- reviewing relationship quality
- confirming whether CSDM Workbench changes are needed
- creating remediation candidates for governed review
What It Checks
Validation can include:
- expected service layers
- valid relationship patterns
- missing required relationships
- invalid or unexpected relationship direction
- service model completeness
- class-specific rule violations
The exact rule set depends on configured CSDM rules and synced data.
Run Validation
- Open CSDM Validator.
- Confirm the active environment.
- Run or refresh validation.
- Review violations by severity, class, or service.
- Open individual findings for details.
Validation quality depends on the ServiceNow data currently synced into cmdbx. If the data looks stale, review Settings > Sync Status before interpreting results.
Review Violations
For each violation, review:
- affected CI or service
- rule that failed
- expected relationship or model structure
- severity
- supporting evidence
- recommended next action
Not every violation should be fixed immediately. Prioritize high-impact services and issues that affect change planning or operational visibility.
Route To Remediation
When a violation needs formal tracking:
- Confirm the issue is valid.
- Create or route a remediation candidate.
- Open Remediation Workbench.
- Review, approve, reject, or stage the candidate.
Use CSDM Workbench for modeling work when the correction involves service structure.
Common Review Questions
Is the violation caused by missing sync scope?
If a required related CI is not synced, the validator may report a gap. Check CI class scope in Settings > Sync Config.
Is the relationship wrong in ServiceNow?
If the source relationship is wrong, correct it through your ServiceNow governance process or an approved cmdbx write-back workflow.
Is the service model incomplete?
Use CSDM Workbench or AI Discovery to help review and improve service modeling.
